Last summer I put 2 rebuilt turbos in. I know everyone advises against rebuilds on this car because they fail, however I found 2 rebuilt ones for $750 so had to take it due to money at the time. Anyway, shortly after I blew passenger side headgasket so I pulled the turbo/head with motor in car. Few weeks after, smoke at idle out passenger side turbo. So basically I'm assuming it was a bad rebuild. What sucks is I JUST had that head/turbo out and it happened once I put it back in. Drivers side turbo is PERFECT. Not a drop of smoke after idling when hot for 20 minutes +. So I guess that one was rebuilt fine. Smoke only happens when car is hot and iding for 1 minute then just stays steady. NO smoke when boosting or letting off boost/deccelarating etc. If I were smoking at idle due to a turbo, wouldn't it smoke under these conditions too? Assuming it is the turbo, theres no way I'm tearing this thing out again since it never smokes except for at a redlight about every other time. Overall, listen to people, don't use rebuilds on this car. On other cars however I have had nothing but good experiences. I know some of you have been fine with rebuilds on our TT's, but its a bad ratio. Anyway, definitely turbo? any other possibilities for smoke? Already have thicker oil in there to slow it down (helped a little). Just pissed that I had the turbo out in my hands a few months ago and put it right back in.
